Sensor-equipped plant pods take the guesswork out of indoor gardening

Have you thought about trying your hand at gardening, but don’t have the green thumb to keep those plants alive? There’s a new Kickstarter project that might be able to help. Plug in and plant is a wall-mounted system of modules that not only neatly organizes indoor plants, but each is equipped with Bluetooth sensors for room, humidity and light. This technology collects environmental data and offers guidance for optimal plant growth. A smart water tank also uses the collected information to modify the watering regime as needed for up to 30 days. The details are fed to a companion app that displays each senor’s stats independently, analyzes the data, and provides care suggestions.

The Plug & Plant is also a modular setup with panels that house expandable pods to make a larger foliage display. If you’re concerned about dirt, the system doesn’t use any. Instead, it uses biodegradable biofoam that allows plant roots to spread the same way as regular soil. There are 30 different plants to choose from, ranging from lettuces and herbs to peppers and tomatoes. To snag your kit, the beginner’s package will set you back $49 while you’ll want to shell out upwards of $189 if you’re looking for one that includes this handy watering system. Plug & Plant is expected to ship next May.
